Broto with Humayun Khan's "Between Worlds" band - playing at the
Festival d'Essaouira Ganoua Musiques du Monde, Morocco
Broto has accompanied Humayun Khan and vice versa for many years. The first concert they played together was over 20 years ago. The 2 recent shows were on the 24th and 26th of June 2011 in Essouira on the northern coast of Africa in splendid Morocco. Broto's recollection is that "Sitting onstage I looked up and was treated to a panoramic sight of a beautiful sunset over the Atlantic and realized that I was seeing it from Morocco, North Africa. It was lovely visiting the Arab world and seeing the change firsthand. While the recent North Africa upheavals in countries like Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Syria and Libya are still in process, they've already achieved their revolutions. Egypt and Morocco can lead the way by making democracy work, forming a new Arab League and cementing relations with Israel. Now what they need is a revolution of the mind. The other music was good with Trilok Gurtu, Ari Hoenig, Salif Keita and of course the jam with the Ganoua singers and especially the tonal artistry of Humayun Khan and the timeless chants of Hamid El Kasri's Moroccan Ganouan tradition."
